Round 4 of the British Triathlon Super Series acted as the qualifier for the European Youth Triathlon Championships, being held in Melilla this October. With the usual Heats and Finals format as in previous years, the familiar venue of Mallory Park played host to exciting racing for Youth athletes looking to represent GB at the biggest Youth triathlon competition of the year.

Saturday Heats – Youth Men

3 heats over the Saturday evening saw just 7 per heat go to the A final + the 7 fastest losers across all heats. Heat 1 was led in by Andrew de Koning, with Tom Mythen and Benjamin Wilmot following in less than 5s later. Heat 2 was led by Marley Griffiths, 25s faster than heat 1, with Stanley Phillips and Will Grundy following next across the line. The 3rd and final heat proved the fastest with Ben Allen crossing 1st to claim his spot in the A final and Oliver Frary and Will Hughes rounding out the top 3 across the line.

Sunday Finals – Youth Men

The main event for the Youth Men kicked off at 2pm, with the chance to represent GB in Spain, for the Youth European Champs on the line.

Over a short fast distance, close to super sprint, a 400m swim –7.5k bike -2k run, would keep the pace high. The swim was led out by Jamie Longeran and Leon Boulting, much like the previous series races, consistently showing their swim strength, with Ollie Squire a few seconds further back before a bigger gap to the rest of the field.

The three out in front earlier into the bike were swept up by the bigger chasing pack and consequently this meant the run became the deciding factor for the top spots. It proved quite early there would be a two man battle for the win with Tom Mythen and Ben Allen pulling away at the front. Both taking the two fastest run splits, a timely kick at the end saw Mythen pull away from Allen to take the win by just a second and secure the automatic selection spot for the Youth European Champs, gaining his second representation at this event following on from his 11th place in Austria last year. Ben Allen 2nd, earned his highest finish in a Super Series triathlon this year, with Youth A athlete Ollie Squire taking 3rd to round out the overall Youth podium.

Saturday Heats – Youth Women

Two heats meant a few more places in the A final per heat for the youth women, but provided no break in fast racing in the effort to secure A final spots. Heat 1 was led in by Kitty Scott, Ruth Friend and Sophie Mitchell, all separated by just two seconds with consistently similar splits across the race. A slightly faster Heat 2 saw Emma Graham-Brown cross 1st, with Freya Smith and Emilia Waugh following in just behind.

Sunday Finals – Youth Women

Over the same distance as the Youth men, 400m swim –7.5k bike -2k run, the A final provided close racing as expected with no clear winner until the final moments.

Youth A Summer Smith led the swim out with a sizeable solo gap, taking 17s seconds over 2nd out the water, Bibi Abernethy, before the rest of the field followed a further 10s after.

The race came together at the front on the bike with a larger group into T2 and the fight for European qualifying spots on the line over a run race. Over just 2km, Summer Smith edged her way just in front with the quickest run split to take the win and secure her place on the GB team at the Youth Europeans. Ellie Birchall pushed her all the way to line taking 2nd, just 1s behind. To close out such a close race Emma Graham-Brown rounded out the podium, 6s further back, after consistently being at the front of the race from the start.
